🛡️ Insurance
To ensure your walk is covered by Ramblers insurance please read the walk leader insurance fact sheet. In particular we would like to emphasise that:
- You must be registered with the Ramblers as a volunteer.
- You need to assess and mitigate any risks on your walk. You don't need to fill in a form but these should be written down and included in your pre-walk briefing.
- If there is an incident on your walk this must be reported using an Incident Report Form.
🌐 The Ramblers Website
The following is a step by step guide through the Ramblers website from the home page. It also gives links to take you directly to the pages more pertinent to leading group walks. You can take whichever route you prefer to get to the information you need.
Click on Support Us, scroll down and click on Volunteering. This is the start of the website you need for leading group walks.
Here you will find the Document Library. Those most important to leading walks are held under Walking Activities, where you'll find three folders: Leading and Organising Walks, Navigation, and Walks Manager.
Also under Volunteering is a folder entitled Walk Leadership. This is the main area of the guidance for leading group walks. Have a browse through the folders held here. Key resources include:
- Walk Leadership Online Training
- First Aid on Group Walks
- Managing Group Size
- Recommended Kit for Leading Group Walks
- Resources for Walk Leaders
The Resources for Walk Leaders folder contains:
- Walk Leader Handbook — covers the eight guiding principles of group walks.
- Walk Leader Checklist — covers the planning and delivery of a group walk.
- Risk Assessments — offered as a starting point. There are three standard risk assessments:
- Skills Framework — describes walk grades, features, and required first aid/navigation skills.
- Sign in Sheet — groups may adapt to their needs.
- Route Card — useful for more remote walks.
- Info for Walkers — explains responsibilities of walkers. LWR requires all walkers to carry emergency food, drink, and clothing. Groups may adapt this further (e.g. footwear requirements).
Have a browse through the site to fully acquaint yourself with expectations as a Walk Leader.
